What is The American Roadside?
Good question! When the automobile began to transform American culture and society, it also spawned a fascinating and ever-evolving series of businesses alongside the road. Diners. Drive-In Theaters. Motels. Snake Farms. Mystery Spots. Places like Wall Drug, South of the Border, Weechi Wachee Springs, The Corn Palace, Frontier Town, Storybook Village and on and on. Some large. Some small. But all an integral part of the American roadside phenomenon.

So. The American Roadside website is here to help visitors stay in touch with the way that roadside continues to change and mutate...on a daily basis. Much of the original roadside is now lost, a victim of changing times, property values, suburbanization and the corporate takeover of nearly every sector of business...making it harder and harder for "Mom and Pops" to survive.

We have a keen interest in making sure that, at the very least, people hear about the roadside bits that are still out there. More than a few great old roadside diners and other attractions have been saved...simply because the web helped spread the word far and wide...and connect a seller with a willing buyer.
